From the Middle Ages to the First World War

The permanent exhibition in the New Castle shows exhibits from the Middle Ages up to the beginning of the First World War. The oldest items date from the 15th century. Suits of armour, helmets and bladed weapons can be viewed in the glass cabinets, as well as an artificial limb from a knight, who lost his hand in fighting, that dates back to the late medieval period. The exhibition also highlights examples of the first firearms and various pieces of equipment.

In the Dürnitz, the prestigious hall on the ground floor of the main building, the central theme is the Thirty Years War (1618-1648), which held the whole of Germany in its grips and for centuries remained in the memory of the population as one of the cruellest wars in German history. Particular eye-catchers are the blackened suits of knights’ armour – the so-called Pappenheimers. In addition, Falkonettes (light-weight field guns), paintings, swords and an original leather jerkin and felt hat from the time of the Thirty Years War are also on display.

The valuable exhibits are not only of great historical significance and craftsmanship, but also unparalleled witnesses of their time. In addition to weapons and armaments, a particularly prominent feature of the exhibition is the Tent of Grand Vizier Suleiman that was captured during the Battle of Mohacs (1687).

A particular highlight is the Hall of Flags, where all the flags and banners of the Royal Bavarian Army are on view (over 150 items). The exhibition also includes original uniforms, weapons, equipment and a large number of paintings depicting daily life in times of war and peace in the Bavarian army in those days.
